Distance Learning and
eLearning: What can they offer you?
Distance learning has changed over the years, from a cumbersome process
involving the mailing and sending back of books, papers and tests, to the
virtual world of e learning online, where your work and resources are at
accessible via the computer.
It does however, present challenges for both the instructors and the students.
Distance learning is "faceless" for instructors who are perhaps used to
interacting with students in a real-time classroom. They may have students in
their online "classroom" from several countries and different cultures. This
makes e learning a new forum that requires a different approach to presenting
material.
The delivery of distance learning programs may involve a variety of
technological platforms and venues, including email between students and/or the
instructor, bulletin boards, chat room discussions, or real-time video
conferencing. Assignments are sent out, returned, and discussed through all of
these mediums, while consultations with instructors supplement the online
resources provided for the course.
For the student, distance learning means flexibility in their education, but it
also means a commitment of time and effort. Because the means to learn or
increase academic credits has become easier, does not mean the learning itself
will be easier. There will be no teacher hanging over them, demanding that work
be turned in. It is up to each individual to adhere to a reasonable time
schedule, while enjoying the flexibility of e learning at their own pace.
With the ever-changing job market demanding more of applicants, distance
learning can be the key to opening doors that might have remained closed to
students who are unable to attend regular classes.
